Science for Women (Tamil)

'Science for Women' aims to reach out to the women in the poorly literate as well as literary challenged sections of society both in the urban and rural sectors across the country. Through participatory programmes specially designed with specific issues in focus and using the community participatory form of radio-programming this project will study how best women can be encouraged to the benefits of science in daily life.

<p>The vision is to develop the PGP CR as a reliable up-to-date and useful source of valuable information to the local rural public and student community.</p> <p>The mission is to disseminate useful socio economic information, latest developments in agriculture, animal husbandry, poultry and local culture to the public. The mission is also to<br />Disseminate developments in education, career opportunities, guidance on developing personality, self confidence etc to the student community.</p>

<p>What inspired the initiative was that the CR Namakkal area is a fast developing belt inTamil Nadu with schools and colleges and big student community. People are enterprising and hard working. They have adesire to know the latest developments. Then there are certain socialproblems likes AIDS, child labour, etc.</p> <p>PGP CR was established with theaim of catering to the local rural community and student community. Programmes are devised and broadcast aiming atthese two segments.</p>

PGP Community Radio @90.8 MHz broadcasts its programmes for eight hours daily between 7:00 am – 11:00 am (Original) and 4:00 pm – 8:00 pm (Repeat).

<p>Signature Programme: UzhavumThozhilum. Community Participation: Villagers and students are our target listeners. Both are involved in preparation of programmes as well. Innovations in Format: Our programme on social issues like AIDS is prepared in an innovative format. It clears misapprehensions about AIDS and discussessocial taboossuch as discrimination of people living with HIV/AIDSin a theatrical format backed up by experience of the people and information from experts.</p>

<p>Funding and Partnerships PGP CR is completely financed by PGP Education and Welfare Society, a non-profit trust.</p>

<p>A programme titled IrundaVeetukuOruAgalVilakku (Lamp In Dark House) was made on the theme of forgiveness. It dwelled on how people living with HIV / AIDSare looked down by the society because the dreadful disease is identified as an outcome of immoral acts. It has had a very positive affect on the listeners who have become more aware.</p> <p>Similarly, AgalVilakkuis a feature highlightingthe fact that AIDS is not contagious.</p> <p>IvangaSonthaKaalilNikkiraanga(They Stand On Their Feet)shows the reality of the situation of women who might be glorified in traditional literature but in realityare forced to depend on the men folk for their survival.</p> <p>These programmes have elicited 100% participation of the community with technical facilities provided by PGP CRS and have won two National Awards.</p>
