AIDS awareness in Tamil media (Tamil)

Ms. Kalpana from Center for Media Studies, Delhi talks about the level of awareness on HIV AIDS that the Tamil media, including Community Radio, spreads to its audiences. This was part of the research study that was conducted by CMS.

Mission & Vission

<p>The vision of Kongu Community Radio is to help create a community with equal access to knowledge, information, participation and rights. &nbsp;The mission of Kongu Community Radio is to serve the cause of the people in the coverage area by utilising Community Radio to secure freedom of expression, general welfare and social uplift.&nbsp;</p>

Genesis

<p>The parent institution Kongu Engineering College is a premier institution providing technical and managerial education. The institution is situated in rural area. The management constituting of philanthropic people wanted to help the society around the institution by disseminating required information, awareness programmes and participation in social aspects. They thought that community radio is a very useful tool to reach people around. Therefore they have decided to setup a community radio in the institution.</p>

Thematic Focus

Kongu Community Radio broadcasts for 10 hours daily between 7:30 am – 10:00 am and 12:00 noon – 7:30 pm.

Languages of Broadcast: Tamil, occasionally in English.

Name of the Programme Format Description
Motivational Speech Song One of the notable programmes is a song rendered by a student Ms Sriranjini which is in the form of a letter by a poor girl student studying in a school and staying in the hostel to her toiling mother who struggles to earn a livelihood, but tries to educate her daughter despite difficulties – a touching song.
TB Awareness Interview One of the notable programmes as a part of TB Awareness programme, Kongu CR interviewed patients afflicted by TB, but have taken proper medication and cured themselves – Their experiences were shared with listeners.
Female infanticide Skit One of the notable programmes a skit by students on propaganda against female infanticide was presented. Well received by listeners
Education for all Question and Answer One of the notable programmes included an interaction with former President of India, Dr APJ Abdul Kalam with students at Kongu Engineering College – Broadcast over Kongu CR.
AIDS Awareness Phone-in live One of the notable programmes was a phone-inlive programme on Independence Day on India’s freedom. Mr Stalin Gunasekaran a social activist and organizer of Erode Book Fair replies to queries from listeners over phone

Programme

<p>Signature Programme: Arivom Aanmigam, Dinam oru thagaval, Thannambikkai Thalirgal, Ariviyal Paarvai, Vizhipunarvu. Community Participation: Programmes are made by students of the Kongu Engineering College, Kongu National Matriculation School, other nearby educational institutions, community members, Government officials and professionals from various fields. Our chief co-ordinator and programmers liaison and arrange for participatory content creation. Innovations in format: Discussion with doctors and other professionals, programmes by rural school children, programmes from rural illiterates.</p>

Partnership & Funding

<p>Funding and Partnerships The initial funds for setting up the Community Radio Station came from the parent institution, Kongu Engineering College that provided the required budget for meeting the recurring and non-recurring expenses. We plan to send funding proposals for projects in the coming years.</p>

Impact & Stories

<p>Rural women benefited from our health check-up camps. The camps have especially pointed to cases of anaemia &ndash; a condition they have been made aware of and ameliorated. Programmes centring on awareness around TB, HIV/AIDS have created very good impact in the community. The Kongu Community Radio Studio is a good model for many organisations aspiring to establish Community Radio Station and many have visited Kongu Community Radio&rsquo;s studio while planning to set up theirs. Besides, listener meets, communication from listeners, opinions from society indicate that we have created very good impact on the community around us in various areas.&nbsp;</p>
